Jimmy Teru Murakami in Dundee this week, to pick up an honorary degree from Duncan Of Jordanstone.
In his honour, the Dundee Centre For Contemporary Art (DCA) is showing his classic 'When The Winds Blows' tonight at 7:30.
A true classic! This chilling Cold War tale is based on Raymond Briggs graphic novel that satirises the British government's infamous nuclear war ‘Protect and Survive’ booklet. Murakami’s criminally neglected masterpiece remains one of the most thought-provoking anti-war films with a heartbreakingly poignant ending. Jim and Hilda Bloggs (voiced by John Mills and Peggy Ashcroft) are a typical retired couple in rural Sussex. Drinking endless cups of tea, they have an unwavering faith in the wisdom of their government. While they understand that a Third World War is imminent, they fail to realise what this will mean, naively expecting the nuclear blast to be little more than a minor inconvenience… JIMMY TERU MURAKAMI is an artist and animation director / producer who has made an exceptionally meritorious contribution to the film and television industry. He is internationally recognised as one of the founding fathers of animation. Over five decades, he has worked in California, New York, Japan, France, Italy, the Netherlands, England and Ireland. His colleagues include Ernest Pintoff, George Dunning, Richard Williams and James Cameron. Murakami's short films have been shown to great acclaim around the world. When the Wind Blows was his feature film directing debut. When the Wind Blows gets this rare screening in Dundee on the eve of Jimmy Murakami receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Dundee. Organised in collaboration with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, School of Animation
Thanks to Tayscreen for the info.
(Murakami San also directed the excellent 'Battle Beyond The Stars' in 1980 which, is well worth checking out - and would make a *much* better game than the three most recent Star Wars titles...)
