We started this week fairly slowly. Well, it was a bank holiday, but over the last several days we've been noting stories, articles and interesting snippets about the launch of GTA IV.
We had quite a mix. A US News network anchor who seriously loathed the game, retailers breaking street dates, controversy over the review scores, impact on share prices, the collapse of civilisation, debate on whether it's a 'perfect' game, PS3 versus Xbox sales, the cost of development, multiplayer gaming, jack thomson's considered opinion and our favourite, market analysts wading in and telling everyone they're wrong.
Looking back over it, there were over 60 links with varying opinion, valuable insight and - to be fair - a huge amount of ill-informed opinion and hype.
So to hell with it. Rather than regurgitate the headlines, analysis and argument, you can google it and find out what everyone else thinks.
Here's the bottom line. GTA IV is online to become the best selling game yet released. Beating not just games like Halo 3 (the previous record holder), but movie releases like Harry Potter and Pirate of the Caribbean.
From MCV:
GTA IV has become the most lucrative
entertainment launch of all time – dwarfing best-ever releases in music, video
and literature.
Take Two has confirmed that GTA IV sold six million units
globally in its first week – with an estimated retail value of more than $500
million.
The title sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening
day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.
The
previous biggest entertainment launch week was that of cinema blockbuster
Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007), which took $404 million at the
Box Office.
"We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms
of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary
gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken
sales and rating records as well,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of
Take-Two.
More importantly, based on the feedback and comments we're hearing, Rockstar North has done it again. Every single person we've spoken to so far, is loving the game.
While we're STILL waiting for someone to send us a copy, we've played it and the same dark (dark) humour, irreverent approach and fluid gameplay mean that it's just going to keep on going.
Hurrah! Scotland rocks. Again.
